Born March 18, 1977
Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional, D.R.
He saved 327 games — 19th on the all-time list — across seventeen seasons and eleven clubs, which is more clubs than any of the men above him on that list played for. He led the American League with 48 saves in 2014 and was Comeback Player of the Year in 2012, when he was thirty-five and had been released the winter before.
That 2012 season with Tampa Bay is the outlier: 76 appearances, 48 saves, and five earned runs allowed all year. He was signed for two million dollars after San Diego had let him go, and it is among the best returns any club has had on a one-year deal for a reliever.
He wore his cap tilted to one side and mimed firing an arrow into the sky after saves, which some found charming and others did not, and he kept doing it into his forties. The writers gave him no votes in 2025.
