He played first base for the Cleveland club that won the 1948 World Series, the last one that franchise has won, and outlived every one of his teammates. Thirteen seasons gave him 1,146 hits, 172 home runs, 723 runs batted in and a .268 average, with four All-Star selections.
He hit 29 home runs with 117 runs batted in for the 1951 White Sox and 22 more the following year, and won a second World Series with the Yankees in 1956. Eight clubs used him in all, some of them for weeks.
He spent forty years afterward as a scout, farm director and general manager, running the Atlanta and Texas clubs in the 1970s, and published a memoir at ninety-one. He died in October 2021, at a hundred years and ten months. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
