Benito Santiago Marquee

b. March 9, 1965 · San Diego Padres 1986–1992, Florida Marlins 1993–1994, Cincinnati Reds 1995, 2000, Philadelphia Phillies 1996, Toronto Blue Jays 1997–1998, Chicago Cubs 1999, San Francisco Giants 2001–2003, Kansas City Royals 2004, Pittsburgh Pirates 2005

He hit in 34 consecutive games in 1987, which no rookie and no catcher had done, and was the unanimous Rookie of the Year with all 24 first-place votes. He batted .300 that season with 164 hits at twenty-two.

He threw to second base from a crouch without standing up, which coaches told younger players not to imitate and which worked: three Gold Gloves, and a reputation that changed how runners ran on him. Twenty seasons gave him 1,830 hits, 217 home runs, 920 runs batted in, five All-Star selections and four Silver Sluggers.

Nine clubs used him. A car accident in 1998 broke both his knees and he came back for seven more seasons, and at thirty-seven he was the most valuable player of the 2002 Championship Series for San Francisco. He was Puerto Rican. The 2011 ballot gave him one vote of 581.
