He came up in July 2005 and gave Pittsburgh fourteen starts at 8-2 with a 1.81 earned run average, which is as good a half-season as a rookie has had. Then the league found him. He went 10-15, 3-8, 5-14, 11-16 and 8-15 in the five years after that, and he was an All-Star in the middle of it, in 2009, at 11-16.
Milwaukee turned him into a left-handed reliever in 2014 and he was good at it for six years: 74 appearances that season with a 2.45 earned run average, then 71 for the White Sox, and work for four more clubs after that.
Fifteen seasons gave him 69 wins against 91, a 4.31 earned run average, 1,360 innings and 854 strikeouts across 570 appearances. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
