He grew tobacco in Ewing, Kentucky, pitched semi-professionally on weekends, and did not sign a professional contract until he was twenty-five. Pittsburgh brought him up the next spring and he won 12 games as a rookie, including a one-hitter in his second start.

Philadelphia released him in August 1972 and Detroit picked him up. He went 10-3 with a 2.06 earned run average the rest of the way and the Tigers won the division by half a game, which is as direct a claim as a waiver pickup can make.

Eighteen seasons gave him 141 wins against 155, a 3.77 earned run average, 2,411 innings and 27 shutouts, with two All-Star selections eight years apart. He was a starter for a decade and a relief pitcher after forty, and went home to the farm every winter. He died in 2011, at seventy.
