Tom Zachary Marquee

On September 30, 1927 he threw the pitch Ruth hit into the right-field seats at Yankee Stadium for his sixtieth home run of the season. He argued that it was foul. Two years later he was pitching for the Yankees himself and went 12-0, which is still the best undefeated season anyone has had.

Nineteen seasons gave him 186 wins against 191 with a 3.73 earned run average, 3,126 innings and 186 complete games, for seven clubs. He won two games in the 1924 World Series for Washington, the only one that franchise won in that city.

He was a Quaker from North Carolina who had pitched under an assumed name to protect his college eligibility, and served in the First World War with an ambulance unit. Two ballots in the late 1950s gave him one vote each. He died in 1969, at seventy-two.
