He saved 319 games, 23rd on the all-time list, with a 3.97 earned run average across sixteen seasons. He saved 235 for Detroit, more than anyone else in the club's history, and led the American League with 42 in 2000, which is also the year he was chosen for his only All-Star team.

He wrote a weekly column for The Sporting News while he was still pitching, about what the work actually involves — the waiting, the innings that go wrong, what the manager is thinking. Almost nobody active writes anything at all, and fewer write honestly about failing in front of forty thousand people.

Eight clubs used him and Detroit twice. He left at thirty-four, saved 40 games with a 2.10 earned run average for Florida at thirty-seven, and went back to Detroit for the 2006 club that reached the World Series, saving 37. The nickname was Roller Coaster, and it came from how he got the outs rather than whether he got them. The writers gave him no votes in 2014.
