He started at forward for the North Carolina State team that beat UCLA in double overtime and won the 1974 national championship. Nine years later he was in the Baltimore bullpen when the Orioles won the 1983 World Series. No one else has both.

He was 6 feet 7 and threw hard: 26 saves and a 2.51 earned run average for the 1980 Orioles, who won 100 games, and 60 or more appearances in three seasons. Thirteen seasons gave him 41 wins, 76 saves, 729 innings and a 3.95 earned run average across 485 appearances for six clubs.

He pitched for the Cubs club that won the 1984 division and for the Yankees in the late 1980s, and finished with Cleveland in 1989 at thirty-six. He coached college pitchers at Northwestern for twenty seasons after. No Hall of Fame ballot has listed him.
