Stuffy McInnis Marquee

Connie Mack's infield of McInnis, Eddie Collins, Jack Barry and Frank Baker was called the hundred-thousand-dollar infield, which was what Mack said he would not sell it for. It won the World Series in 1910, 1911 and 1913. McInnis won two more, with the 1918 Red Sox and the 1925 Pirates, playing first base in all five.

Nineteen seasons gave him 2,405 hits, 312 doubles, 1,063 runs batted in and a .307 average, with 1,995 games at first base. He struck out 251 times in 7,822 at bats — about once every thirty-one trips — and in 1921 he made one error all season, handling 1,652 chances for the Red Sox.

He managed the Phillies in 1927, coached at Harvard for seventeen years, and turned up on fifteen Hall of Fame ballots and committee lists without ever getting close. He died in 1960, at sixty-nine.
