Service reached his peak with Kansas City in 1998. He made 73 relief appearances, went 6-4 with four saves and posted a 3.48 earned run average across 82 innings, striking out a career-high 95.
Twelve seasons gave him a 20-22 record, 16 saves, 413 strikeouts and a 4.99 earned run average in 416 innings. He started only one of his 338 appearances and never completed a game. His eight saves for Kansas City in 1999 were his single-season high.
Philadelphia introduced Service to the majors in 1988, followed by three years away. He later pitched for Montreal, Colorado, Cincinnati and San Francisco before his three Kansas City seasons. After Oakland in 2000 and two more years away, he split 2003 between Arizona and Toronto, then finished with the Diamondbacks in 2004.
