Sad Sam Jones Marquee

The nickname came from his face, which people read as mournful, and from a cap he wore pulled low. Twenty-two seasons gave him 229 wins against 217, a 3.84 earned run average, 3,883 innings and 250 complete games, for seven clubs across the American League.

He won the sixth and deciding game of the 1918 World Series for Boston, went 23-16 for them in 1921, and then went to New York in the trade that followed the Babe Ruth years. On September 4, 1923 he no-hit Philadelphia at Shibe Park, and the Yankees won the World Series that October, the first of their titles.

He was still pitching at forty-two, for the White Sox, and won 17 games for Washington at thirty-six in between. Three writers' ballots gave him one vote each, in 1939, 1955 and 1956.
