He hit 31 home runs in 408 at bats for the 1977 White Sox and 200 in a career of 4,502, a rate better than a home run every twenty-three at bats, mostly in part-time work. Seventeen seasons gave him 1,195 hits, 610 walks and a .265 average.

The Yankees traded for him in 1976 and told him to cut his hair, which was photographed before and after and is among the best-known images of that clubhouse. He said later that the haircut cost him the only thing anybody remembered him for.

He hit .358 for the Yankees in 1979 after being traded back, and reached the World Series with them in 1976 and 1981. He was never an All-Star. The 1991 ballot gave him no votes. He died of a tumor of the jaw in 2018, at sixty-eight.
