Parrish spent his first ten major-league seasons with Detroit, catching for the Tigers from 1977 through 1986 before playing for six more clubs through 1995. He appeared in 1,818 games behind the plate, the overwhelming share of his 1,988 career games.
He collected 1,782 hits, 305 doubles, 324 home runs and 1,070 runs batted in while batting .252. His fullest year at the plate came in 1983, when he had 163 hits, 27 home runs and 114 runs batted in for Detroit.
Parrish won three Gold Gloves from 1983 through 1985 and six Silver Sluggers from 1980 through 1990. His eight All-Star selections also spanned 1980 to 1990.
The 2001 Hall of Fame ballot gave him nine votes from 515 cast. He was born in Clairton, Pennsylvania, on June 15, 1956, and batted and threw right-handed.
