The Mets released him in 2007 after a positive drug test in the minor leagues and the Yankees released him in 2011; the White Sox signed him for a minor-league contract and he was in their rotation by May 2012. He made 32 starts or more in five straight seasons for them.
Fourteen seasons have given him 113 wins against 110, a 3.76 earned run average, 2,101 innings and 1,816 strikeouts, with an All-Star selection in 2016. Chicago traded him across the city in July 2017 for Eloy Jiménez and Dylan Cease.
He is Colombian, from Arjona, and one of the few from that country to have had a long career. He was still starting games in 2025, at thirty-six.
