He hit .275 with 1,913 hits, 333 doubles, 329 stolen bases and 138 home runs across eighteen seasons. The best of them were in Chicago: .303 in 1975 with 182 hits, and six seasons of being the most watchable player on a bad club.

The excuses became their own literature. He once told a manager he could not play because crickets in his hotel room had kept him up all night, and another time because his eyelid was stuck shut. Both are documented and both were, as far as anyone knows, true.

He was Cuban, a cousin of Bert Campaneris, and left in 1961. He was never an All-Star in eighteen years. He coached for the Yankees, Reds and Nationals for two decades afterward. The 1986 ballot gave him one vote of 425.
