Jeff Reardon Marquee

He saved 367 games across sixteen seasons and seven clubs, led the National League with 41 in 1985, and in June 1992 passed Rollie Fingers to become the all-time leader. He held the record for a year and a half. Three men passed him within the decade and he now stands twelfth.

That is the shape of the save record: it moves. The teams he did it for were mostly good ones — Montreal for six seasons, the Twins club that won the 1987 World Series, then Boston — and the earned run average, 3.16, is higher than most of the men around him on the list because he pitched more innings per appearance than closers who came later.

Four All-Star selections. The writers gave him 24 votes of 499 in 2000 and he came off the ballot after one year, which is what has happened to nearly every closer who was not Mariano Rivera or Trevor Hoffman.
