Gene Woodling Marquee

b. August 16, 1922 · Cleveland Indians 1943, 1946, 1955–1957, Pittsburgh Pirates 1947, New York Yankees 1949–1954, Baltimore Orioles 1955, 1958–1960, Washington Senators 1961–1962, New York Mets 1962

He was in New York's outfield from 1949 to 1953, the only five-in-a-row run of titles anybody has had, and he hit .318 across those World Series with six home runs. He platooned throughout and complained about it constantly to Casey Stengel, who kept doing it.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,585 hits, 147 home runs, 830 runs batted in, 921 walks and a .284 average. He hit .300 or better five times and was an All-Star in 1959 for Baltimore, at thirty-six.

He came up in 1943, lost two years to the Navy, and finished with the 1962 Mets, which is a fair distance from the 1949 Yankees. He raised horses in Ohio afterward. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2001, at seventy-eight.
