Elmer Valo Marquee

b. March 5, 1921 · Philadelphia Athletics 1940–1943, 1946–1954, Kansas City Athletics 1955–1956, Philadelphia Phillies 1956, 1961, Brooklyn Dodgers 1957, Los Angeles Dodgers 1958, Cleveland Indians 1959, New York Yankees 1960, Washington Senators 1960, Minnesota Twins 1961

He came from Rybník, in what was then Czechoslovakia, at the age of six, and is the only player born there to have had a real major-league career. Connie Mack signed him out of a Philadelphia high school and used him for fourteen years.

Twenty seasons gave him 1,420 hits, 228 doubles, 942 walks and a .282 average. He hit .283 with 119 walks in 1949 and .364 in 283 at bats in 1955, at thirty-four. He was known for playing right field without regard for the fence and spent parts of several seasons hurt because of it.

He moved with the Athletics to Kansas City, then played for seven more clubs in six years as a pinch hitter, drawing 18 pinch walks in 1960, which was a record. The 1967 ballot gave him two votes of 292. He died in 1998, at seventy-seven.
