He hit 442 home runs — 44th all-time — and batted .236, which is the lowest average of anyone who has hit 400. He led the National League in home runs twice, with 48 in 1979 and 37 in 1982, struck out 1,816 times, and walked 608.

In 1977 he played for four clubs in four divisions, which nobody had done: the Mets, Padres, Angels and Yankees, in that order, inside one season. Seven clubs had him in sixteen seasons, several of them briefly.

In 1986, at thirty-seven, he hit 35 home runs and drove in 94 for Oakland and no club offered him a contract for 1987. He had sent a live rat to a woman reporter that season. The writers gave him three votes of 430 in 1992, fewer than anyone who has hit 400 home runs except Adam Dunn.
