Carlos Baerga Marquee

b. November 4, 1968 · Cleveland Indians 1990–1996, 1999, New York Mets 1996–1998, San Diego Padres 1999, Boston Red Sox 2002, Arizona Diamondbacks 2003–2004, Washington Nationals 2005

On April 8, 1993, in the seventh inning against the Yankees, he homered right-handed and then left-handed, the first player to do it in one inning. He had 200 or more hits with 20 home runs in that season and the one before, which no second baseman had managed twice since Rogers Hornsby.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,583 hits, 279 doubles, 134 home runs, 774 runs batted in and a .291 average, with three All-Star selections and two Silver Sluggers. He drove in 105 and 114 runs in 1992 and 1993 for Cleveland clubs that were about to become very good.

He was traded to the Mets in July 1996 for Jeff Kent and Álvaro Espinoza, which Cleveland lost badly, and his weight and his knees took the rest. He was Puerto Rican, from San Juan, and came back at thirty-four to play three more seasons. The 2011 ballot gave him no votes at all.
