Born December 1, 1925
Anadarko, OK, USA
His father named him for the president, a Roman and a Choctaw chief, and did not consult his mother. He was part Choctaw himself, from Anadarko, Oklahoma, and was in the major leagues at eighteen in 1944, going 3-10 for Brooklyn in a war year.
Then nothing worked for twelve years. He was 8-25 lifetime when Cleveland finally made him a starter at thirty-one, and he went 16-8 in 1958 and 19-8 in 1959, made the All-Star team, and finished those two seasons 35-16. Fifteen seasons gave him exactly 92 wins and 92 losses, a 4.00 earned run average and 1,609 innings.
Cincinnati traded for him and he went 4-14; Philadelphia got him at the end and he won 24 games in two years there. He coached for four clubs into the 1970s. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 2010, at eighty-four.
