In 2007 newspapers across the country reported the death of Bill Henry, the former relief pitcher, in Lakeland, Florida. The man who had died was an impostor who had spent decades telling people he was Henry and had married on the strength of it. The real Bill Henry was alive in Texas and had to telephone the wire services himself.
He was a left-handed reliever before that was a specialty with a name, working 65 games for the Cubs in 1959 and then five seasons for Cincinnati, where he saved 17 in 1960 and made the All-Star team. He was on the mound for the 1961 club that won the pennant.
Sixteen seasons gave him 46 wins, 90 saves, 913 innings and a 3.26 earned run average across 527 appearances for six clubs. He died for real in 2014, at eighty-six. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
