The Metropolitans won the American Association pennant in 1884 at 75-32 and met Providence in the first championship series ever played between the champions of two leagues — the ancestor of the World Series. They lost all three games.
The same man owned this club and the National League's New York Gothams, and after 1885 he moved Tim Keefe and the manager Jim Mutrie across to the other one, which is how the Giants were built. What was left went 53-82 and then 44-89, and the club folded after 1887.
It won 270 and lost 309 across five seasons. One Hall of Famer played here, Keefe, who won 37 games in the pennant season. Home was the Polo Grounds and then the St. George Cricket Grounds on Staten Island, reached by ferry, which is among the reasons nobody came.
