His first major league work, twelve games for Troy in 1880, produced a 0.86 earned run average over 105 innings. He won 342 games against 225 losses, tenth on the all-time list, struck out 2,564, and completed 554 of his 594 starts. His career earned run average was 2.63.
In 1883 he started 68 games for the New York Metropolitans and finished every one, working 619 innings and striking out 359. Five years later he won the pitching Triple Crown, going 35-12 with eight shutouts and 335 strikeouts, and the Giants won the championship in 1888 and again in 1889.
He was secretary of the Brotherhood of Professional Base Ball Players and helped organize the 1890 Players' League, then pitched for its New York club and returned to the National League when it folded. The veterans committee first considered him in 1936 and elected him in 1964, thirty-one years after he died.
