He doubled to left field in the ninth inning of the third playoff game in 1951, scoring one run and putting the tying run on third, and was standing on second when Bobby Thomson hit the pennant-winning home run three batters later. He had hit .282 with 173 hits that season.

Fifteen seasons gave him 1,658 hits, 222 doubles, 114 home runs, 552 walks and a .279 average, with an All-Star selection in 1952. He hit .301 in 1949 and played both first base and the outfield for the Giants clubs that won pennants in 1951 and the World Series in 1954.

He managed the Cubs from 1972 to 1974 and worked in that organization for years afterward. The 1966 ballot gave him four votes of 302. He died in 2009, at eighty-two.
