Wally Schang

Wally Schang Marquee

b. August 22, 1889 · Philadelphia Athletics 1913–1917, 1930, Boston Red Sox 1918–1920, New York Yankees 1921–1925, St. Louis Browns 1926–1929, Detroit Tigers 1931

He caught for the Athletics club that won the 1913 World Series, the Red Sox club that won in 1918 and the Yankee club that won in 1923 — three franchises, three championships, and six World Series in all. Nobody else of his era did that.

Nineteen seasons gave him 1,506 hits, 264 doubles, 849 walks and a .284 average across 1,435 games behind the plate. He hit .306 in 1919 and .316 in 1921, and he was a switch-hitter, which was rare for a catcher and rarer still for one who could hit.

He caught Babe Ruth as a pitcher in Boston and as a hitter in New York. He finished with the Browns and Detroit and caught in the minor leagues into his forties. Five writers' ballots and three committees have taken up his name. He died in 1965, at seventy-five.
