Downs started 44 games through 2005, but Toronto's move to the bullpen changed the direction of his career. He made 81 relief appearances with a 2.17 earned run average in 2007, then lowered it to 1.78 across 66 games in 2008. He saved five games that season and nine the next.
Thirteen seasons gave him a 38-40 record, 27 saves, 575 strikeouts and a 3.56 earned run average in 751 innings. He started 50 of his 619 appearances and completed one game. Six seasons with Toronto accounted for 347 appearances, easily his longest stay with one club.
He began with the Cubs and Expos in 2000, missed two major-league seasons, and returned to Montreal in 2003. After Toronto he pitched for the Angels, Braves, White Sox and Royals. Downs made 55 appearances between Chicago and Kansas City in 2014, his final season, at thirty-eight.
