He won the Rookie of the Year award in 1990 with all twenty-eight first-place votes and a Gold Glove in the same season, having come from San Diego in the trade that sent Joe Carter there. He was the catcher for the Cleveland clubs that reached the World Series in 1995 and 1997.
In July 1997 the All-Star Game was played at Jacobs Field and he hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to win it, and was the game's most valuable player in front of his own crowd. That October he hit .367 in the postseason and homered off Mariano Rivera in the Division Series.
Twenty seasons gave him 1,236 hits, 112 home runs and a .273 average, with six All-Star selections. Knee and shoulder injuries held him to 1,377 games in all. His brother Roberto Alomar is in the Hall of Fame and their father Sandy Alomar played fifteen seasons. The 2013 ballot gave him 16 votes of 569.
