Hudler produced his best offensive season for California in 1996, hitting .311 with 94 hits, 16 home runs, 40 runs batted in and 60 runs across 92 games. He also stole 14 bases, combining the power and speed that appeared separately in earlier seasons.
Thirteen seasons gave him 461 hits, 96 doubles, 56 home runs, 261 runs and 107 stolen bases with a .261 average. He played 281 games at second base and 247 in the outfield, plus shorter stretches at shortstop, first base and third.
The Yankees brought Hudler up in 1984. He later played for Baltimore, Montreal and St. Louis before sitting out the 1993 major-league season. Three years with California produced his late peak, and two with Philadelphia closed his career in 1998. His single-season stolen-base high was 29 for Montreal in 1988.
