Red Lucas

Red Lucas Marquee

b. April 28, 1902 · New York Giants 1923, Boston Braves 1924–1925, Cincinnati Reds 1926–1933, Pittsburgh Pirates 1934–1938

He batted .281 with 404 hits across sixteen seasons and was used as a pinch-hitter more often than any pitcher has been, finishing with 114 pinch hits, which was the record until Smoky Burgess passed it in the 1960s. Managers batted him sixth and seventh; Cincinnati sent him up for other pitchers all week and started him on Sundays.

He won 157 games and lost 135 with a 3.72 earned run average and 204 complete games, and led the National League in complete games three times — 28 in 1929, 28 again in 1932 — for Cincinnati clubs that finished seventh and eighth.

He was from Columbia, Tennessee, was called the Nashville Narcissus by a sportswriter who liked the sound of it, and pitched five seasons for Pittsburgh at the end. Three writers' ballots gave him no more than two votes. He died in 1986, at eighty-four.
