He caught for a dozen years and hit .295, and then spent his last four seasons doing almost nothing but pinch-hitting for the White Sox — 20 or so hits a year off the bench, and 145 in all, which was the record until Manny Mota passed it in 1979. He was heavy and slow and could hit anything.

Eighteen seasons gave him 1,318 hits, 126 home runs, 673 runs batted in and a .295 average, with six All-Star selections. He caught Harvey Haddix's twelve perfect innings in 1959 and was behind the plate for the Pittsburgh club that won the 1960 World Series.

In 1955, for Cincinnati, he hit three home runs in a game and drove in nine. He was from North Carolina, was called Smoky after his father, and coached afterward. Two ballots gave him one vote and then two. He died in 1991, at sixty-four.
