He drove in 107 runs in 1929, 112 in 1930 and 114 in 1931, playing shortstop for Browns clubs that finished fourth, sixth and fifth. He had 192 hits in 1930 and 188 in 1931 and hit .305 across those three seasons.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,454 hits, 298 doubles, 89 home runs, 799 runs batted in and a .286 average. He played 835 games at shortstop and the rest at third, first and in the outfield, and he pitched four times in relief, nine innings in all, once at forty-one.

He came back at forty-one to play seven games for the 1946 Giants, six years after his previous major-league game. He coached for Cleveland and then for the original Mets, and died of a heart attack in November 1962, at fifty-seven, weeks after that first Mets season ended. Two ballots gave him a vote or three.
