Randy Gumpert Marquee

b. January 23, 1918 · Philadelphia Athletics 1936–1938, New York Yankees 1946–1948, Chicago White Sox 1948–1951, Boston Red Sox 1952, Washington Senators 1952

He went 15-9 with a 3.68 earned run average for the White Sox in 1951, his best season and only All-Star selection, at thirty-three. Two years later, pitching for Washington on April 17, 1953, he threw the pitch Mantle hit out of Griffith Stadium and over its left-field bleachers, a shot measured afterward at 565 feet — among the longest home runs anyone had recorded to that point.

Ten seasons gave him 51 wins against 59, a 4.17 earned run average, 1,052 innings, 47 complete games and 6 shutouts across five clubs. He pitched for the Yankees for three seasons in the middle of his career before Chicago claimed him.

He finished with Boston and Washington both in 1952. He scouted for the Yankees afterward. He died in 2008, at ninety. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him.
