Ramón Ortiz won fifteen games for the Anaheim Angels in 2002 and started Game 3 of the League Championship Series and Game 3 of the World Series they went on to win. It was the high point of a fourteen-year career spent mostly giving clubs innings.
He gave up a great many home runs doing it — the fastball was straight and he was not shy about it — and his career earned run average of 4.95 reflects that. He pitched for eight organizations and spent time in the Dominican and Mexican leagues around the major league seasons.
Born in Cotuí in the Dominican Republic in 1973, Ortiz struck out 895 batters across 1,448 innings and finished 87-86, closing out with Toronto in 2013.
