Born March 23, 1966
Middletown, NY, USA
He was a first-round pick out of Dartmouth in 1987 and did not stick in the major leagues until he was twenty-eight. Cincinnati tried him as a starter — 8-15 in 1997 — and Atlanta put him in the bullpen in 1999, where he found the job he was built for.
He worked 73 games with a 1.99 earned run average for the 2002 Braves and made the All-Star team at thirty-six, then 73 more for the Cubs the following year. Left-handed hitters batted under .200 against him across those seasons.
Fourteen seasons gave him 53 wins, 20 saves, 879 innings and a 3.90 earned run average across 639 appearances. He pitched for the Braves clubs that won four straight division titles. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
