Mike Marshall Marquee

b. January 15, 1943 · Detroit Tigers 1967, Seattle Pilots 1969, Houston Astros 1970, Montreal Expos 1970–1973, Los Angeles Dodgers 1974–1976, Atlanta Braves 1976–1977, Texas Rangers 1977, Minnesota Twins 1978–1980, New York Mets 1981

In 1974 he appeared in 106 games, which nobody has come near before or since — the next-highest total is 94 — and threw 208 innings out of the bullpen, all of them in relief, going 15-12 with 21 saves and a 2.42 earned run average. He won the Cy Young Award, the first relief pitcher to do it.

He had a doctorate in kinesiology from Michigan State and pitched the way his own research told him to, which put him at odds with almost every coach he had and with the idea that arms need rest. He appeared in thirteen consecutive games that summer, another record.

Fourteen seasons and nine clubs gave him 188 saves and a 3.14 earned run average. He led his league in saves three times, ten years apart at the ends. He taught his method to pitchers privately for decades afterward and died in 2021, at seventy-eight. The 1987 ballot gave him six votes of 413.
