Mike Kreevich Marquee

b. June 10, 1908 · Chicago Cubs 1931, Chicago White Sox 1935–1941, Philadelphia Athletics 1942, St. Louis Browns 1943–1945, Washington Senators 1945

He hit .302 with 16 triples, the most in the league, for the 1937 White Sox, and .323 with 175 hits in 1939, when he was chosen for the All-Star team. He played center field for Chicago for seven years.

Drinking cost him the job in 1942 and again in 1943. The Browns took him back on the condition that he stop, and he hit .301 for the 1944 club that won the only pennant that franchise ever had, then lost the World Series to the Cardinals, who played in the same ballpark.

Twelve seasons gave him 1,321 hits, 221 doubles, 75 triples, 514 runs batted in and a .283 average. He was from a coal-mining family in Mount Olive, Illinois. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1994, at eighty-five.
