Texas signed him out of Guanare, Venezuela, at sixteen and had him in the rotation at twenty-one. He went 10-6 as a rookie in 2013 and spent the next nine years as a fourth starter for six clubs, never once with an earned run average under four.
He signed a one-year contract to come back to Texas in 2022 and went 12-8 with a 2.89 earned run average, and made the All-Star team. He was thirty-one and had never had a season within a run and a half of it.
Fourteen seasons have given him 91 wins against 93, a 4.41 earned run average, 1,631 innings and 1,153 strikeouts. He has pitched for the Twins, the Red Sox, the Pirates, the Padres and the White Sox around three separate spells in Texas. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
