Born November 22, 1926

He won the second, fifth and seventh games of the 1957 World Series for Milwaukee, the last two of them shutouts, the last on two days' rest. The Yankees had traded him away seven years earlier for Johnny Sain. He allowed two runs in twenty-seven innings and was the most valuable player of the Series.
Eighteen seasons gave him 203 wins against 144, a 3.66 earned run average, 3,067 innings, 158 complete games and 33 shutouts. He won 20 in 1958 and 21 in 1959, leading the league that year, and led in shutouts twice. He was accused of throwing a spitball for most of his career and enjoyed the accusation, fidgeting on the mound to encourage it.
On May 26, 1959 he threw thirteen shutout innings and won 1-0, which is only remembered because Harvey Haddix threw twelve perfect ones for Pittsburgh in the same game. Fifteen writers' ballots got him to 97 votes of 403 in 1984. He died in 2007, at eighty.
