Born September 2, 1900
Covington, KY, USA
He spent most of his twenties in the minor leagues and did not pitch a major-league inning until 1930. He then lasted thirteen seasons, almost all of them in relief, and was working 39 games a year for Cleveland at forty.
Thirteen seasons gave him 76 wins against 48, 63 saves, 1,038 innings and a 3.90 earned run average across 430 appearances. He went 11-3 for the 1939 Red Sox and 8-3 with a 1.96 earned run average in 63 games for Cleveland in 1944, at forty-three.
His brother Johnnie caught in the major leagues for twelve years, mostly for the Red Sox, and the two were briefly teammates. Joe finished with the Braves in 1945 at forty-four. No Hall of Fame ballot ever listed him. He died in 1970, at sixty-nine.
