Joe Adcock

Joe Adcock Marquee

b. October 30, 1927 · Cincinnati Reds 1950–1952, Milwaukee Braves 1953–1962, Cleveland Indians 1963, Los Angeles Angels 1964, California Angels 1965–1966

On July 31, 1954 at Ebbets Field he hit four home runs and a double: eighteen total bases, which stood as the record for forty-eight years until Shawn Green had nineteen. He used a teammate's bat, having broken his own the day before.

On May 26, 1959 Harvey Haddix retired thirty-six Milwaukee batters in a row, twelve perfect innings, and lost. In the thirteenth an error and a walk put men on, and Adcock hit the ball over the fence — it was ruled a double when he passed Hank Aaron on the bases, and the final was 1-0. Lew Burdette had thrown thirteen shutout innings for the other side.

Seventeen seasons gave him 1,832 hits, 336 home runs, 1,122 runs batted in and a .277 average, most of it for the Milwaukee club that won the 1957 World Series. He was chosen for one All-Star team in all that, which is hard to explain, and no writers' ballot ever listed him.
