Born July 26, 1977
Santiago, Santiago, D.R.
He was a swingman in Texas for eight years with an earned run average near five. His shoulder came apart in the spring of 2009 and he did not pitch at all that season. Tampa Bay signed him for 2010 on a minor-league deal and he gave them 63 appearances and a 1.34 earned run average, the lowest of any reliever in the league who worked that often.
Detroit paid him for three seasons and got them: 66, 73 and 66 appearances, and 24 saves in 2013 when the club needed a closer. He was on the mound in the 2013 League Championship Series when David Ortiz hit the grand slam that turned that series.
Sixteen seasons gave him 58 wins, 53 saves, 1,068 innings, 1,058 strikeouts and a 3.83 earned run average across 764 appearances for eight clubs. He is from Santiago in the Dominican Republic. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
