Kansas City took him from San Diego in the Rule 5 draft in December 2006 for fifty thousand dollars, which obliged the Royals to keep him in the major leagues all season or give him back. He saved 17 games as a rookie and 42 in 2010, and 229 in fourteen seasons with a 3.11 earned run average.
He was Mexican, had already had elbow reconstruction before Kansas City took him, and had it again in 2012, which cost him a season and a half in the middle of his best years. He came back and closed or set up for eight more clubs.
The nickname was the Mexicutioner, which he asked people to stop using in 2011 because of the drug-war killings at home. Two All-Star selections. He is not yet on a Hall of Fame ballot.
