Born November 11, 1976
Royal Oak, MI, USA
San Francisco took him fourth overall in 1997 and traded him before he threw a major-league pitch. He was a swingman and then a middle reliever for six clubs across a decade, missed all of 2010 with a knee injury, and signed with Pittsburgh in July 2011 at thirty-four.
Pittsburgh made him the closer in 2013 and he saved 33 games with a 2.70 earned run average, made the All-Star team, and pitched for the club that ended twenty consecutive losing seasons. He saved 24 more for Atlanta in 2015 after tearing an Achilles tendon the year before.
Fifteen seasons gave him 34 wins, 79 saves, 684 innings and a 4.22 earned run average across 595 appearances for nine clubs. His father Steve pitched for Detroit and Toronto in the 1970s. He is not on a Hall of Fame ballot.
