Iván de Jesús

Iván de Jesús Marquee

b. January 9, 1953 · Los Angeles Dodgers 1974–1976, Chicago Cubs 1977–1981, Philadelphia Phillies 1982–1984, St. Louis Cardinals 1985, New York Yankees 1986, San Francisco Giants 1987, Detroit Tigers 1988

Iván de Jesús led the National League with 104 runs scored in 1978 and stole 41 bases as the Chicago Cubs' shortstop, which was the peak of a career built on getting on base and running rather than on hitting for average.

He is now most often mentioned in connection with the trade that ended his time in Chicago: in January 1982 the Cubs sent him to Philadelphia for Larry Bowa and a minor league infielder named Ryne Sandberg, who went to the Hall of Fame.

Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico in 1953, de Jesús played fifteen seasons for seven clubs, collecting 1,167 hits and 194 stolen bases. His son of the same name later played in the majors as well.
