Harvey Kuenn Marquee

He came up as a shortstop for Detroit and collected 209 hits in his first full season, 1953, more than anyone else in the American League. He led it in hits again in 1954, 1956 and 1959, and in doubles in 1955, 1958 and 1959. Eight straight All-Star teams chose him, from 1953 through 1960.

Detroit finished no higher than fourth in any of his eight seasons there. The best was his last, 1959, when he batted .353 with 198 hits and 42 doubles. He was in a Cleveland uniform for 1960 and then spent five seasons with the Giants. He played 747 games at shortstop and moved around the outfield after that, 353 in left field and 343 in right.

He batted .303 across fifteen seasons with 2,092 hits and 356 doubles, and he walked 594 times against 404 strikeouts. The writers put him on fifteen ballots between 1977 and 1991 and never elected him. His best showing was 168 votes of 427 in 1988, when 321 were needed, and he died that February at 57.
