Hans Lobert Marquee

He staged an exhibition race against a thoroughbred named Dick Coogan before a 1913 spring training game, running the bases while the horse ran alongside on a track laid outside the infield, and it went close enough that reports of the finish still differ. He stole 316 bases across his career and was clocked circling the bases faster than almost anyone of his generation.

Fourteen seasons gave him 1,252 hits, 159 doubles, 82 triples, 640 runs batted in and a .274 average, with 1,000 games at third base. He hit 167 hits and drove in 63 runs for Cincinnati in 1908 and had his best all-around season in 1911 with Philadelphia.

He managed the Phillies for one season in 1942 and coached and scouted for decades afterward, working into his eighties. Four ballots have listed him. He died in 1968, at eighty-six.
