Twenty-two seasons gave him 2,225 hits, 390 home runs, 1,314 runs batted in and a .248 average across 2,700 games. He led the American League in home runs in 1976 with 32, the only time he led a league in anything. He was chosen for six All-Star teams and won two Gold Gloves, in 1977 and 1978.

The glove is the part of him this archive cannot show. He played third base for the Yankees for eleven years and was the most valuable player of the 1981 American League Championship Series. The runs a fielder prevents were not being counted when he was preventing them and are not in these tables now, so the .248 sits on the page with nothing beside it.

He came up with Minnesota, spent three years in Cleveland, eleven in New York, and finished with San Diego, Atlanta and Montreal at forty-three. The writers gave him four ballots between 1994 and 1997 and he peaked at 8 percent, which for 390 home runs from that position is a verdict on the average and on what the era chose to measure.
