George Burns Marquee

He hit .358 in 1926 with 216 hits, 114 runs batted in and 64 doubles — a figure beaten only by Earl Webb's 67 in 1931 and matched only by Joe Medwick — and won the Most Valuable Player award with 63 points of a possible 64. He was thirty-three and had already played for four clubs.

Sixteen seasons gave him 2,018 hits, 444 doubles, 951 runs batted in and a .307 average, spread across five clubs: Detroit, the Athletics, Cleveland, Boston and the Yankees. He led the American League in hits twice, eight years apart.

He is not the George Burns who played 1,853 games in the outfield for the Giants at the same time — that one is George Burns, and the two of them made box scores unreadable for a decade. Four committees have taken up his name. He died in 1978, at eighty-four.
