Gee Walker Marquee

b. March 19, 1908 · Detroit Tigers 1931–1937, Chicago White Sox 1938–1939, Washington Senators 1940, Cleveland Indians 1941, Cincinnati Reds 1942–1945

Gee Walker hit .294 across fifteen seasons and was, for a stretch in the 1930s, the most popular man in Detroit. He was also the most exasperating: an aggressive baserunner whose judgment failed often enough that his manager once benched him for it during a World Series.

The Tigers kept him anyway, through pennants in 1934 and 1935 and a championship in the latter. His best year came in 1937, when he batted .335, made the All-Star team and was traded to the White Sox that winter regardless.

Born in Gulfport, Mississippi in 1908, Walker collected 1,991 hits, 997 runs batted in and 223 stolen bases before finishing with Cincinnati in 1945. He died on March 20, 1981, the day after his seventy-third birthday.
